Richard J. Oulton, Esq.
Richard is the founder, President, and a majority shareholder of America Law Group.
He has been a continuously-licensed lawyer since 1973, bringing his decades of experience to the firm. He is licensed to practice law in Virginia, and has been licensed in the District of Columbia and New York. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar. His academic credentials include an Associate of Arts (AAS), Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University at Buffalo, Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Baruch College, and Juris Doctorate (JD) from the University at Buffalo School of Law.
Richard has a history of fighting “the good fight.” He joined the U.S. military on his 17th birthday while still in high school, and he graduated as the youngest member of his class. He attended college for 2 years, until he elected to go on active duty as a combat medic serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. Richard voluntarily extended his active duty to 13 months during the Vietnam War, and also volunteered for a small, behind-enemy-lines U.S. Marine Corps reconnaissance team. He then volunteered again to join the battle-worn “Walking Dead Marines” as a senior medic.
Richard was awarded as a combat-wounded Purple Heart recipient for serving with the famed “Walking Dead Marines” during the Vietnam War. He is a member of the Khe-Sanh Survivors Association, Walking Dead Marine Association, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also has volunteered his legal services as Legislative Officer of the Virginia Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and as an Associate Professor of Health Law at the Medical College of Virginia.
Before he founded Affiliated Attorneys (which later became the America Law Group known today), Richard worked at a large Columbia University teaching hospital, where he was administratively in charge of the Emergency Services Department. He thereafter was recruited as Vice President of a specialty insurer in Virginia, and during his 10 years specializing in malpractice insurance, he became an Associate Professor of Health Law at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.
Richard continued “the good fight” as “The Wyndham Flag Man” in a 4-year battle fought against the developer of Wyndham (a planned Richmond community) for the right of all homeowners to properly fly our American flag atop a flagpole on Memorial Day. He fought the case through the Virginia Supreme Court, and on to the U.S. Supreme Court.
He is the proud father of 3 (Alexis, Jamie, and John), 1 of which was adopted from China and another adopted from Taiwan. Outside of work, he enjoys going to the lake and spending time with his family and friends.
